Foundation Chinese, failure in Chinese and how does the first two question affect your child’s psle score?
In short if your child is near failure in p4 or p5 Chinese, school would ask you if you want your child to take foundation Chinese. Would I take or not?
What is foundation Chinese?
Foundation Chinese means that your child will have to be good in oral, Listening comprehension and can pass a very simple paper 2. So it’s for pupils who cannot cope with standard Chinese. You got a low workload too so you can focus on getting better scores for the other three subjects.
How does foundation Chinese affect your psle score?
Foundation Chinese score is about 30% less score then standard. My gauge is totally my guesstimate but it’s served my purpose quite well. So foundation Chinese 100 is roughly equal to about 70 in standard Chinese.
Please note that The above is a guessing method by me. It’s not proven in mathematics or whatever. You could use it at your own risk.
This would mean if your child just pass Chinese or near passing Chinese, do not opt for foundation Chinese.
Then comes the question if my child failed Chinese, should my child opt for foundation?
Yes. If your child failed and the result is about 21-40, then opting for foundation would not mean a big different but foundation focus on only oral and listening comprehension which could free time for them to study their other subjects.
In conclusion, if your child scores 40-55, choose and insist on standard Chinese. Less than that you can choose foundation if your child need more time for other subject.

Note: This process is very hard so if your child cannot handle stress or cannot work hard then forget it.
